What you need to know

From the time commitments to whether you need qualifications or experience, you'll find more here about the different ways of volunteering for Home-Start.

Volunteer At Door

Home Visiting Volunteers

What we ask of you as a home visiting volunteer:

  • Be a parent or have full-time parenting experience.
  • Undergo a criminal record check at enhanced level.
  • Attend our free volunteer preparation course with other new volunteers.
  • Be able to visit a family at home, once a week, for around two hours, to support them.
  • Understand that your support for families is completely confidential.
  • Be able to commit to at least six preferably twelve months to being a Home-start Mid Suffolk volunteer.
  • Have a non-judgemental attitude and understand about the pressure of bringing up a family

Volunteers do not need any formal qualifications to support a family.

Your experiences as a parent are the most valuable thing to the families we help, and you are fully trained and supported by us for as long you are with us.

Local Trustee

In order to be a trustee volunteer, you will be required to:

  • Be able to give an average of ten hours a month.
  • Be available to attend a minimum of four meetings per year.
  • Undergo a criminal record check at enhanced level.
  • Undergo a selection process.
  • Commit to the legal and financial responsibilities of the role.

Other Helping Hands

We run additional services to support our work, such as play groups, toy libraries, organising social activities, helping with fundraising etc. The experience and skills needed for these will depend on the different roles.

In most cases you will need to undergo a criminal records check.

In many cases there will be training for you.
